Chapter Ten

Sparrow

My body presses into Ace’s hard side. His arm rests behind me on the narrow ledge of the back of the seat. His eyes leave his phone, drawing up my body to meet mine, and a panty-melting smile parts his full lips. It should be illegal how fucking hot these guys are.

I can’t seem to stop ogling him. It doesn’t help when his warm hand comes down on my knee. My body breaks out in goose bumps from the temperature difference between his touch and the AC blowing wildly through the vents.

More warmth presses against my back before a deep growl fills the air next to my ear. “Lose the fucking hand, Ace,” Night grinds out, and Ace explodes into a fit of laughter. Caz and Ellie whip around to see what all the commotion is about.

Ace gives me a wicked grin, like he knows exactly what he’s doing to his friend.

Night doesn’t relax until Ace is no longer touching me and is back on his phone. His fingers grip my chin in a tight hold as he directs my attention to meet his merciless glower. He’s pissed, and I’m loving every second.

“Caz, drop us off at my place,” Night says without breaking our connection. “I need to handle something.”

“But Ellie…” I try to pipe in, but he’s not having the excuses.

“She’ll be fine with Caz. Isn’t that right, man?” Night slaps Caz on his shoulder, getting his attention. They have an entire conversation through the rearview mirror.

My heart beats erratically in anticipation. Since I’m not familiar with the area, I have no clue how long it’s going to take us to get back to Night’s place or where the bonfire is.

“I love this song,” Ellie squeals while turning up the volume. The hard guitar strums of Buckcherry’s Crazy Bitch plays loudly in the truck’s cab.

“Look, baby, it’s your theme song,” Night says next to me, twirling a strand of my hair around his tattooed finger.

I’m sure there’s a compliment in there somewhere. But he’s such a cocky little asshole. The sneer I throw him comes naturally.

“Asshole,” I mouth again, stirring up shit because it’s what I do.

He licks along his bottom lip before biting down, his wolfish grin promising his threats from earlier are soon to come to fruition.

The truck skids to a sudden halt, flinging my body forward. Both Ace and Night’s arms fly up to stop my momentum.

“Jesus fuck, man. Learn how to drive,” Night bites out.

“Just trying to dispel the sexual tension back there. There are other people in the truck. We’re suffocating in here. Plus, we’re here,” Caz points out.

“You’re a fucking idiot, man.” Night laughs. “Take Ellie with you to the bonfire. We’ll meet you there in a bit,” Night states before climbing out the truck, my hand clutched in his, pulling me along with him.

I yank it back, knocking on the passenger side window. It’s an awkward angle to talk to Ellie, so she leans out, and I reach for the edge of the window, pulling myself as close as I can get.
